YouTube, hashtags and music tracks
This week, I wanted to go over something that is relatively new and not everyone is aware of on YouTube and that is... #hashtags! Yes, finally Google has made hashtags available to use on YouTube which makes it much easier for people to discover your videos and your YouTube channel.   Since hashtags are new on YouTube, you might first want to check out a post by Google giving an overview as well as their policies about using hashtags in videos... Use Hashtags to Find Videos  The process of adding hashtags to your videos is super easy and straightforward. For example, let's take a look at a video I posted a couple of weeks ago. - first, go to the Creator Studio section of your YouTube account - click on the edit button for the video you want to add hashtags to - in the description section of your video (right under the title section) is where you'll add your hashtags - the screenshot below shows an example of the hashtags I added to my video    Once you've added the hashtags to your video, go to your YouTube channel, click on the video and you'll see your hashtags (i.e. #soundscape) will now be showing right under the video, just above the title. It's that easy and will make your videos much easier to find for people searching for that topic or hashtag.    Still on the topic of videos, as promised in my previous post... YouTube, music and the answer is YES!  Today I'm sharing the links where you can download 3 music tracks I'm releasing for use in videos on YouTube, Vimeo, etc...  I'm releasing these tracks under a Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution License which basically means you can use my music in both personal and commercial videos for free as long as you list me in the credits somewhere below your video.  The only attribution I ask from people who use my music in their videos is to add something in the text somewhere below the video like... music by marti garaughty https://youtube.com/user/garaughty  See John Henry's  post and video as an example...Houses by John Henry, Music by Marti Garaughty: AR member collaboration  The first 3 tracks I'm releasing are... - Distant Atmospheres a soundscape from one of my own projects- a 60 second orchestral soundtrack I did a few weeks ago and- Minuet in G Minor, a piano tribute I did in March for the anniversary of Bach's birthday   Here are the links to where you can download these tracks if you'd like to use them... - Distant Atmospheres download- Hyperion orchestral soundtrack download- Bach's Minuet in G Minor download  On that note, enjoy the music and if you use any of these tracks in your videos, please let us know so we can check out your creation! Later...                                                                                               For more information about upcoming marketing partnerships, surprises for your clients, graphic goodies, giveaways and to stay on top of all the new tech stuff . . . YouTube, music and the answer is YES !
I think I'm probably the last person on the planet who didn't have a YouTube channel but that changed a few days ago. Why? I'm spending as much time these days composing music as I do painting so to keep things simple, I've decided to use my Instagram account for my artwork since Instagram is the best social media platform for visual content...  And will use my YouTube channel for music projects...  So what does this have to do with you? A few months ago when I posted about my absence from ActiveRain these past few years, where I've been and what I was doing... one of the things I mentioned was my return to the world of music which is what I was doing long before I started playing with paint. Since then, I received quite a few emails and comments from AR members asking if they could use my music in their YouTube videos and what would it cost. Now that I'm back and posting again on a fairly regular basis, I've decided to release some of my music for ActiveRain members who want to use it in their YouTube videos. I'll be releasing it for free under a Creative Commons Attribution license which basically means you can use my music tracks in both personal and commercial videos for free as long as you list me in the credits below your video somewhere(details to follow). Note, my music is kind of eclectic and mostly used for film scores, etc... so it's not everyone's cup of tea but since so many people have asked about it, I thought I'd start releasing some tracks soon.  And since many of you probably have no idea what my music sounds like, here are a few links to a some recent pieces so you'll have an idea about what I'll be releasing...- a 60 second soundtrack I did 2 weeks ago for Soundiron Audio's product launch video- Distant Atmospheres a preview track from one of my own projects- Minuet in G Minor a piano tribute I did a few months ago for the anniversary of Bach's birthday  I just have to do some editing and will be releasing these tracks (and more) for you to use in your YouTube videos, etc. beginning in the next week or two. I'll post the download links as soon as it's ready to go and on that note, I have to get back to work. Later...                                                                  For more information about upcoming marketing partnerships, surprises for your clients, graphic goodies, giveaways and to stay on top of all the new tech stuff . . . You can also find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, LinkedIn and by email...                             As well as . . .

Google is going to public shame you !
A quick note to say "thanks" to everyone for the warm welcome back messages in my previous post. I never really left ActiveRain but I haven't posted in a really long time so here I am again and it's really nice to see so many familiar faces and new ones as well.  Before I get to the fun stuff, I wanted to explain why Google is forcing all websites to start using the HTTPS protocol. I'll try to explain this in plain English without getting "too techie" on you. For the past few weeks I've been updating all of my client's websites over to HTTPS even if their site doesn't take credit card payments or collect personal data. Why? In case you missed it, for the past few days a lot of news has been coming out about how Google's Chrome browser is essentially going to public shame you if your site is still using the HTTP prefix in it's URLs instead of HTTPS.   For more details check out...Chrome now marks all unencrypted websites as ‘not secure’Google Chrome WARNING: These websites are 'NOT SECURE'  What this means is that if your site is still using HTTP in the URL instead of HTTPS, the Chrome browser is going to give your site visitors a warning message that looks like this...   So as you can see, this is also a marketing problem. When people see a red warning telling them your website in NOT SECURE, they'll probably leave your site ASAP! Also, having an HTTPS website is now an important factor in SEO so this is going to affect your search engine position and rankings!    I'm going to skip the technical details about HTTPS and SSL Certificates since that is way beyond the scope of a marketing blog and really not something you should be doing yourself unless your techs skills are seriously decent.  The quick, not-techie version is... - When you visit HTTPS secured websites, your web browser checks the site’s security certificate(SSL) to verify that it's legitimate. When you send information over an HTTPS connection, no one can eavesdrop on the info in transit. - SSL Certificates are small data files that use cryptography to digitally tie together a domain name or a server name with an organization's ID (i.e. your company name) and location. - The SSL Certificate is installed on a web server and activates a digital "padlock" and the HTTPS protocol allows secure connections between a web server and a browser.    If you're a techie, really know your way around the back end of your website and have full access to your CPanel, you probably know what to do and don't need my help or advice.  If you're not a techie and haven't had your site updated to HTTPS you should... - ask your webhosting company if they're going to provide you with and install an SSL certificate on your site. Some web hosting companies now include this in their hosting plans. - if not, ask whoever maintains your site if thay can install an SSL Certificate for you and to enable HTTPS on your site - once that is done, ask them to do a redirect so all of your site's posts and pages will automatically redirect your HTTP URLs to the new HTTPS URLs - if you're using Google Analytics on your website, you will also have to update your analyitcs account with the new HTTPS prefix - and if you're really a prefectionist, when you have time you should update your site's URL with the HTTPS prefix in all of your online profiles   If I've managed to scare, confuse or complicate your life, just leave your questions in the comments below and I'll try to clear up any confusion I may have caused. ;-)  Later...                                                                                                    For more information about upcoming marketing partnerships, surprises for your clients, graphic goodies, giveaways and to stay on top of all the new tech stuff . . . And we're back . . . a thank you, a preview and a cat !
As the post title says... I'm back! After a long absence and a lot of encouragement from AR members who apparently missed me, I've decided to try and make time in my crazy busy life to post here again on some sort of regular basis but first...   Before anything else, I wanted to say a BIG thank you for all the awesome birthday wishes you guys sent me yesterday along with the oodles of cats pics that seemed to "infiltrate" the topic! ;-)  And in case I missed thanking anyone for their birthday wishes, cute cat pics or anything else... let me say again "THANK YOU"! I really appreciate everyone who reached out to me both on and offline to make my BDay extra special...https://activerain.com/blogsview/5253958/happy-birthday-marti-garaughtyhttps://activerain.com/questions/show/64757/do-you-know-who-has-a--birthday--today----https://activerain.com/questions/show/64752/have-you-taken-a-moment-to-wish-happy-birthday-to-the-leader-of-the-group-the-art-of-marketing-you-group-https://activerain.com/blogsview/5253974/happy-birthday-marti-garaughty       And in case you're curious, here is a brief list of some of the topics I'll be covering starting in the next few days... - Marketing with the F word...- Why I stripped in public...- Introducing Mrs. Nipple, the best social media bio ever !- 2111+ likes for a blank canvas...- Black is beautiful... and so is white space !- No comments, no problem... how to be invisible, irrelevant and ignored !- My 2 philosophies, it's about lions and perfectionism...- The Blog Header is dead, here's why...- Why I go out of my way to feature YOU...- What you can and can't be in 2018...- Would they miss you? Do you even matter?- and a ton of other stuff, surprises, etc. that I have swirling around in my head these days...  I also thought it might be fun to occasionally share some photos from my daily life, hopefully you'll do the same so we can get to know a bit more about the people behind the blogs. And since I received almost as many BDay wishes from cats and I did from humans, I thought I'd share a photo of one of my fav cat friends, his name is Leo. He is as smart and sweet as he is handsome!    And on that note, I better get back to my crazy busy life. Later...                                                                                     For more information about upcoming marketing partnerships, surprises for your clients, graphic goodies, giveaways and to stay on top of all the new tech stuff . . . A quick ? re ActiveRain, a thank you and a side note...
Quick Update: The tech problem in groups seems to have finally been resolved. Thx AR and to everyone who sent me feedback about this, much appreciated! hi everyone... yeah it's been awhile since my last post. Even though I've been maintaining and moderating The Art of Marketing YOU group, the past few years have been crazy busy with new adventures and projects that didn't leave me much time for anything else, also... I want to thank everyone (in no particular order) who has kept this group alive with some truly awesome content including Barbara Todaro , Debe Maxwell, CRS ,  Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland , Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers , Pat Starnes, Brandon, MS , Joan Cox , Patricia Feager , Jim Paulson , Hannah Williams , Victoria Ray Henderson Marshall Henderson and so many others! Your on topic, insightful posts make our group worth reading even when I'm AWOL. ;-)  Before I start posting again, I had a quick question. Is anyone else having problems contacting ActiveRain or is it just me? In the past few months I've contacted AR throught their contact form, by phone and this week through one of their blog posts and also on their Facebook page but received no reply. Today I noticed that ActiveRain's official blog hasn't been updated since December 15, 2016, almost a year ago so... Now I'm wondering if anyone is actually still handling questions from members? Any feedback would be appreciated! Update: Thx to your quick and awesome help, both Noel and Robert from ActiveRain have already contacted me about the tech issue in groups, a fix is in the works! ;-)   And to answer the question I've been asked by so many AR members about if I'll be coming back or posting again, the answer is probably YES! I've been crazy busy with...- renovating my condo- spending more time than expected on a new music project - and of course painting   But I've been jotting down ideas for some stuff I'd like to talk about and share so as soon as I have time to post on a regular basis, I do intend to be more active on AR again. Later...  For more information about upcoming marketing partnerships, surprises for your clients, graphic goodies, giveaways and to stay on top of all the new tech stuff . . . The Art Of Marketing YOU... group guidelines update
Just a quick note and update to let everyone know that becasue a small group of people have been flooding this group with off topic content, we're now removing off topic content when we see it. That means if your post isn't about marketing, marketing ideas, marketing strategies, examples, etc... it probably doesn't belong in this group. This is NOT the place to post property listings, market reports, posts pushing your Amazon affiliate links, religious stuff, recipes, etc... please post those things in the appropriate groups! Also, because 99% of the spam is generated by vendors(SEO, lead generation, etc...), we are no longer accepting vendors in this group. Moderating spam has become too time consuming. On a brighter note, I also want to thank all of you who've been posting the awesome, on topic content. There are too many to name but you know who you are and I really appreciate the ideas you share with us. And to answer the question I've been asked by so many AR members about if I'll be coming back or posting again, the answer is probably YES! I've been crazy busy with...- renovating my condo- spending more time than expected on a new music project- and of course painting but... I've been jotting down ideas for some stuff I'd like to talk about and share so as soon as I have time to post again on a regular basis, I do intend to be more active on AR again. Later... _________________________  The most interesting, original, thought provoking, on topic posts will be featured in the group. This will give additional exposure to you, your ideas and your blog! We want quality, not quantity. One well written, well thought out post will get you more attention and more readers/subscribers than a bunch of off topic stuff! With the help of our members & moderators, we try to keep the group focused, on topic, positive and useful to our group's members.  To try and keep the group on topic and the content relevant to our members, we occasionally delete off topic posts. For more details, see the Active Rain guidelinesThere are a lot of sharp cookies here in the Rain so let's make the best of it.   For more information about upcoming marketing partnerships, surprises for your clients, graphic goodies, giveaways and to stay on top of all the new tech stuff . . . Dear Facebook, please get a freekin' clue about PERMISSION MARKETING!
Hi guys, are you in the mood for a quickie? Cool, here we go... In case you didn't notice, in their seemingly never ending quest to abuse privacy, Facebook changed the email address in your profile to an @Facebook address. Here is an example from my own FB profile... This is so not cool but another example of why Facebook needs to get a clue about Permission Marketing. But here is the easy fix, just check out this screenshot as a guide and follow the steps below... - click on the "about" button in your profile - scroll down to your email address then click the "edit" button - now click on the circle next to your Facebook email addr. and change the setting to "Hidden From Timeline" - next click on the circle next to your other email address(es) and change their settings to "Shown On Timeline" - then hit the SAVE BUTTON near the bottom of the Edit popup and you're done Yes, it was simple enough to fix but should have never happened. Just another example of Facebook doing stuff they should never be doing. Go figure! Later... P.S. Because of the insane amount of spam, self promotion, etc... being posted by various vendors and suppliers, this group is going back to it's original intention (see group guidelines) as a place for "for real estate agents and brokers who want to share their real world marketing ideas and experience". We don't have time to waste moderating and filtering out all the spammy stuff. March wallpaper/calendar... blog graphics and branding
Hi guys, while I have a few minutes I'm stopping by to drop off my new March wallpaper/calendar that you can use, edit or give away on any of your own sites / blogs. I haven't done this in awhile and with all the requests I've been getting... here it is again. ;-) The image above is a preview of this month's wallpaper/calendar we're giving away on my website It's a photo of a new painting from The Complexity of Dreams series... If you'd like to use this image on your own blog or site, you can either download it and give it away as is or feel free to add your own text. As always... People do not download wallpapers to see advertising on their computer screens so... less is more, keep it simple. Here is an example... You can use just about any graphics editor to add your own text to this calendar/wallpaper. I wrote some tutorials about this back in August 2008 and I'll be doing more updated tutorials about this as soon as I have time. The only thing I ask is that you don't edit my painting, name or domain. Other than that you're welcome to... - use it on any of your websites or blogs - as a give away by email or as a download directly from your site/blog - you can add your name, domain or whatever you like Enjoy!!! Build a Better Blog... How to survive the next tech meltdown from ActiveRain to WordPress part 1
Hi guys, in the next part of my Build a Better Blog series I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at a few simple ways to protect our online presence. In other words... In the past few weeks I've seen a ton of posts here on AR like... ActiveRain & Reliability ~ My 2¢'s Worth HAS ACTIVERAIN REALLY BEEN SOLD? A $60,000 Eulogy for ActiveRain and out on the web... Why Your Self-Hosted Blog is More Valuable than Your Facebook Page Google's Blogger back after 20-hour outage Twitter: Experiencing site stability issues What We Can Learn From Amazon’s Cloud Collapse Amazon’s outage in third day: debate over cloud computing’s future begins Hackers Take Down Sony's PlayStation Network The one thing we should learn from this is that we're responsible for our online presence. Not ActiveRain, not Amazon and not your webhost. Of course they're the first ones we point the finger at when things go badly but... your blog readers just see that your website is offline. They don't care where it's hosted or who is at fault. The recent and frequent tech meltdowns have inspired me to recreate my web presence in a way that no matter what happens, I'll have a backup plan ready the minute my sites or blogs go dark. In the next few posts I'm going to show you a few simple, creative and clever solutions that will keep you online no matter what happens. Stay tuned! Build a Better Blog... turning WordPress themes into custom Rain blogs
Hi guys, it's been awhile since I wrote something for my Build a Better Blog series and since I've had a lot of questions and emails about my outside Rain blog, here goes... First I thought I'd give you a quick overview of what I did to make it look so different from the standard Rain blogs and I'll point out a few things that might not be obvious until you play around with it. The fact is that what you see on my outside Rain blog is actually a theme I had designed on WordPress. Here are a couple of photos of a default AR blog theme I used as a starting point... In the first photo above you can see that... - it has a custom blog header designed to fit the default space of 960 pixels W x 134 pixels H - the BIG TEXT title which is standard on the outside blog - and it filled up the entire screen from left to right on a standard monitor (screen resolution of 1024 pixels wide i.e. iPad in the horizontal position) In the second photo below you'll see the standard AR outside blog footer (bottom of the page area)... Now let's take a look at the makeover to see how I cleaned it up and gave it a more polished look ... In the photo above you'll see that... - I removed the BIG TEXT title since I wanted to add my own text with color and a shadow in the new header - I designed a new header sized 700 pixels W X 200 pixels H so I'd have more "breathing room", I find the standard AR blog header much too narrow for adding graphics - to add even more breathing room, I added some space between the blog header and the content - the fonts were changed and the links were given a more web standard type color - you can see I also reduced the size of the content area and the sidebar so I could have some of the background showing through - then I added another graphic to the background along with a shadow area behind the content so it would pop off the page a bit - if you go to my outside blog(see link below) and scroll down the page, you'll see that the background is fixed or static, meaning you always see it no matter how far down you scroll And last but definitely not least. I wasn't too thrilled with all the "stuff" in the standard blog footer area(bottom of the page/posts) so... - I removed all the "stuff" - and added a very simple graphic If you've been reading me for awhile you know that I'm a big fan of clean, minimal design. I could have also added a logo or a bit of text but for now I decided to leave it as it is. I have a ton of ideas for other ways to pimp out Rain blogs so my outside Rain blog will probably look very different if you're reading this weeks or months from now but for the next little while, you can see the live version of this design at...  http://garaughty.activerain.com While Rain blogs don't have the kind of features you find in WordPress, Posterous or Tumblr, they do have some nice possibilities which we'll take a look at in some upcoming posts. For more information about super affordable custom designs for your Rain, WordPress, Tumblr and Posterous blogs you can reach me at marti@garaughty.com  Later... If you have additional topics you'd like to see covered or would like more information about custom graphics, themes or to book a 1 on 1 consultation to create or customize your WordPress or ActiveRain blogs, you can reach me here Later... Peeing in public is not a great marketing strategy! + REsources
Hi guys... I'm not sure if it's just that time of year, Spring Fever or something else but the level of drama on ActiveRain seems to have hit a new all time high lately. Everything from rude comments to ongoing drama that doesn't really benefit anyone. Michael and Lenn are just 2 of many who've had to deal with the stupid stuff that goes on here on AR, Facebook and pretty much everywhere else online. It's happened to me and eventually it will probably happen to you. But just for fun, I want to set aside the very real possibility of legal consequences from bashing people in posts or comments and look at something that is more likely to happen. For everyone person who comments on these type of mini dramas, they are probably 5 or 10 (or more) who read but never comment. But the drama leaves a lasting impression, probably not a very good one. I don't know about you but most of the emails and projects I receive thru ActiveRain are from people who've been reading my blog for a long time and contact me when they want more info, a quote or whatever but... I've never heard of most of them until they contact me. I call them The Silent Majority. They read without commenting and get in touch with me if/when they want to do something awesome together. I'm Irish and walking away from a fight just isn't in my nature, I'll stand up for myself anytime, anywhere but I've learned that fighting stupid battles for the world to see (online) just isn't a smart business decision so if possible, I don't do it. - I don't have the time or patience for drama - I'm normally crazy busy and often refer projects to other people - I won't refer projects to people who create drama, my clients don't have the time or patience either The things is, The Silent Majority might not comment or get involved in the online stupidity but they are reading, watching and probably staying away from the drama kings/queens. Online drama is like peeing in public, it happens but it's not a great marketing strategy. Maybe I'm wrong, what do you think??? To save you time, here are some of my favorite resources that I found on the web this week. Notes! Really, really smart notes! Springpad is a free app that automatically categorizes your stuff and enhances it with useful links. Buffer, a smarter way to schedule tweets. Easily post videos or photos on Twitter & Facebook with TwitVid Keep your social networks on-topic with Refynr, a web based filter for your Twitter & Facebook feeds Bouncr stands between unwanted emails and your inbox. Enter your email to create a free, short email address and Bouncr will keep out the junk! Capture photos, videos, music, tweets, posts, and share your entire life online with Memolane Sorting thru and finding all the useful stuff on the web can be a major pain. April graphics: wallpaper/calendar and... the answer is YES!
Hi guys, between the chaos of another crazy busy month I'm stopping by for a few minutes to drop off my new April wallpaper/calendar that you can use, edit or give away on any of your own sites / blogs. The image above is a preview of the April wallpaper/calendar we're giving away on my website  It's a photo of my latest painting... I wrote some tutorials about this back in August 2008 and I'll be doing more updated tutorials about graphics soon. The only thing I ask is that you don't edit my painting, name or domain. Other than that you're welcome to... - use it on any of your websites or blogs - as a give away by email or as a download directly from your site/blog - you can add your name, domain or whatever you like Enjoy!!! For those of you who've been asking if my work will ever be available to download, edit, print in high resolution and give away as promo goodies for your clients, readers, etc... the answer is YES!!! Details coming soon... If you have additional topics you'd like to see covered or would like more information about custom graphics, themes or to book a 1 on 1 consultation to create or customize your WordPress or ActiveRain blogs, you can reach me here Later... Japan Earthquake/Tsunami... various ways we can help, resources and links
Hi guys... the tragedy unfolding in Japan in the aftermath of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake is a very scary sight, especially with the very real possibility of meltdowns at multiple nuclear reactors. It's easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless watching what is going on so... I thought I'd share a few simple ways we can all do something with some excellent resources available to help victims to communicate, find family members, raise much needed emergency funds, etc... Dog Bless You is donating $1 to SearchDogFoundation.org (upto $100,000) for every person who clicks "Like" on their Facebook page to help send search and rescue dogs to Japan Fon Community is giving Free WiFi Access at 500,000 hotspots in Japan to help people connect after the Tsunami Google's People Finder: 2011 Japan Earthquake Your gift to the American Red Cross will support disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific. Please feel free to share these links and resources with your readers on your own blogs. The power of social media means we can all do something to help in our own way. Thanks!
